The Ian Holmes Music Collection
by Ian Kirkpatrick
In July 2017 The Scottish Traditional music scene lost another of the great musicians it has admired throughout the years - Ian Holmes. The late Sir Jimmy Shand paid a complement to Ian some years ago when he said, “You’re a one-off son, for no-one else can play so many different types of accordion and you don’t just play them, you play them well”. Ian Powrie wrote some years ago, “For those of you in the know about these things, you recognise the master at work, no matter what type of keyboard he is playing - and he plays a few”
Piano accordion, Continental 5-row, 3-row British Chromatic and a variety of all sorts from Switzerland, Scandinavia and the Low Countries;
His dedication to getting it right is legendary and his style exemplifies the best that his forbearers, namely the Shands and MacLeods, produced.
The music he writes bears this out. His 2/4 marches are 1998 versions of MacLeod and his common time tunes bear testimony to being a Shand devotee. It has been a great pleasure to have known him and to have played with him on quite a few occasions.
Ian was able to watch the greats, Shand, Powrie, MacLeod develop the Scottish dance band scene in the early days and was ideally placed to extract all the good bits and employ them in his own band in later years.
Apart from his playing he was, as most of us know, a prolific composer and has left us with some really classic Scottish melodies and plenty of them. He had a great interest in Continental arrangements and went on to compose many pieces with Scandinavian and Swiss influence with great precision, and many of the players and friends he made in these counties could scarcely believe the tunes had been composed by a Scotsman.
In 1987 Ian was made an honorary member of the Bromolla Accordion Orchestra of Sweden and he kept in regular contact with many of the musicians he met during his visits to these Countries and established lifelong friendships.
The 1980’s and 90’s was a period where the tunes just kept pouring off his pen often into the wee hours of the morning. Luckily for Margaret he never needed an instrument to score the new creations, they just came from the head.
Ian had asked a good friend to look after his music in the hope that it may be preserved and be of some use to other players young and older. This request was willingly and carefully undertaken and all compositions catalogued, indexed and placed in the Ewart Library in Dumfries in “The Ian Holmes Collection”.
The astonishing total of 506 compositions are attributed to this remarkable musician. Many of the scores in the collection are hand written by Ian with some others computer generated. All of his recordings have been digitalised and are included in the collection. In addition to his compositions there are examples of hand written scores he used in his many Broadcasts and of numerous pieces he had scored of other composers who had clearly impressed him.
There is a photo gallery of the many accordions he owned or played and of band members and acquaintances throughout his musical career. An interesting document was discovered during the collating of the collection, “Ian’s Story” which was written by himself and gives a clear account of his long association with Scottish Traditional Music.
It is hoped that in the future all the material will be available to view online but this will certainly take some time to complete. In the meantime the material is clearly indexed and easy to access and anyone interested will be made most welcome to study the collection at:-
The Ewart Library, Catherine Street, Dumfries, DG1 1JB
Anyone wishing to examine the collection are advised to contact Mrs Alison Burgess on the above number or e-mail prior to their visit until such time as the material is made available online.
Mrs Burgess can be contacted Monday – Friday 10am – 5pm
Photocopying will be permitted where requested.
Copyright infringements are not considered an issue as all material is individually dated and a large amount is original hand written dated manuscripts.
