Editorial
Firstly I’d like to say how much I enjoyed visiting Lockerbie and Skye clubs last month. I really appreciated the welcome that I was given. It’s great to see the support that Clubs the length and breadth of the country receive. Long may it continue.
Computer traumas this month – I’ve just had my machine upgraded, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that everything’s working okay.
Many of you now contact me by e-mail, and my anti-virus software occasionally detects a problem. I receive between 30 and 40 e-mails a day, so it’s vital that I keep up to date. I also use a free programme that I downloaded from the Internet – www.mailwasher.net – before I even go into my e-mail programme. Mailwasher allows you to see what messages are waiting on your server, what size they are, and whether they might contain a virus. You can delete them at the server without ever having to let them into your machine. I find this really useful in cases where I have been sent a massive file that could jam my system; I can simply delete it at the server and contact the sender to advise them to either reduce the file size or send it on CD.
Thank you once again to all of the B&F team, Heather and Charlie (who’ve been busy writing articles), Jude, Alison, Nicol, Alasdair, all at Culross the Printers and everyone who has contributed to this month’s issue.
We’re looking forward to meeting up with lots of you at the AGM and luncheon at the end of the month, when the results of your votes will be revealed. (I’ve told Jude that she has to wear a slinky frock to do the presentations, and she’s agreed, so long as she can find one that matches her wellies!)

Bill Wilkie M.B.E.
by
There must be very few of our readers who do not recognise Bill Wilkie of Perth. Since 1950 he has organised ‘The All Scotland Accordion Festival and Fiddle Championships’ and his music shop has been recognised as one of the best in the country for over 40 years.
Now in his eighties, Perth-born Bill first played in a local dance band at the age of 13, originally on the ‘moothie’, but soon moved on to the accordion. He gained widespread respect as both a player and teacher. During the war he performed in the Ralph Reader Gang Show where he was to form a long-standing friendship with Peter Sellers.
Bill has received many honours in his long and illustrious career – he was awarded the MBE in 1995, and was honoured by the NAAFC in 2001. His most recent was the David K. Thomson Award, which is awarded to a Perth and Kinross resident whom the trustees consider to have made an outstanding contribution to the community. Bill must surely be one of the most deserving recipients and we would like to congratulate him and wish him many more years of service to ‘our kind of music’.
May 1953
Charlie Todd found this gem in a local paper of 50 years ago :-
A suggestion that there should be an Accordion Class at the Perthshire Music Festival caused consternation at Saturday’s annual meeting of the Festival Association.
The proposal came from Mr James Fairweather, who said the accordion was a very popular instrument. He thought an Accordion Class for Under-15’s would attract a good attendance of the public on a Wednesday afternoon session.
Mr Bruce McKerchar commented – “I think it would be too painful for words. I don’t consider the accordion a musical instrument – it’s an instrument of torture”.
“Boogie-woogie” would come next”, suggested Colonel A. Gomme-Duncan, M.P. for East Perth and President of the Association.
The Chairman, Mr David T. Yacamini, was afraid the next step would be ‘the inauguration of a class for bagpipes”.
Felix Burns
The Association is considering the possibility of bringing together the ‘best of’ the Carlisle-based maestro’s compositions in one book so that they are readily available for playeras everywhere. No-one we know of has a complete collection of Felix’s works to pick from (he composed many hundreds of tunes) but the front runners at the moment for inclusion, from those available to us, are :- Woodland Flowers, The Moors of Perth, Shufflin’ Samuel, The Queen Mary Waltz, Old St Paul’s Waltz, The Blue Bird Waltz, The Passing show Waltz and a number of excellent two-steps, namely The Household Brigade, The Dancing Dustman, Sporty Boys, Anything Doing? and The Kitchener Two-Step.
We understand that some schools in the Carlisle area have recently taken an interest in his work. It would be good if they were to come on board with anything of interest they have uncovered. We intend to include a write up (by tom cowing who wrote an article for the B&F a few years ago) and as many photographs as are available. Would anyone with anything to contribute, music, photographs or facts, please get in touch with Charlie Todd.
