Year 24 No 01 September 2000
The 1999/2000 season drew to a close on Sunday, 9th April with Andy Greig and his SDB playing for a capacity crowd. The band set about working their way through many of the ‘auld favourites’ being played between Andy’s comical tales. Andy plays the Shand Morino with Alf McConnachie on keyboard, Brian Ness on fiddle and Rab Stark on drums. Together they produced a sound which was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience and they brought our season to a fine conclusion.
The supporting players during the evening included
Fiddlers – Annie Robertson and Andy Kain.
Accordionists – John Anderson, Peter Jardine, Charlie Thompson, Dave Coke, Agnes Hope, Nelson Callan, Ian Graham, Charlie Todd, Tom Porteous, Jim Paterson and Alan Gardiner.
Keyboard – Dorothy Lawson, Keith Dickson and George Walker.
Drummers – Tom Hope and Eck Williamson.
A new face to the Club was David McCall who graced us with a few tunes on the Scottish Small Pipes. Three local lads, Kevin Gardiner and Kenny Johnstone on accordions and Andrew Barrie on drums, collectively known as ‘The Big Squeeze’ then treated us to some well played sets.
President of the Club, John Anderson, then thanked everyone for their support during the season, particularly those who donated raffle prizes. In turn, John was thanked by Vice-President Tom Hope for all his efforts and friendly banter. All in all, a fine team effort resulting in another successful season.

A large audience turned out for what was to be one of the best Club nights yet with the talents of the recently formed band, Give Way. The younger players are all part of the Keith Dickson Acordion Orchestra and are only in their teen years.
Kirsty Johnson was on lead accordion with Tom Orr on second accordion, Mairi Johnson on a ‘Bridge’ electric fiddle, Gordon smith on drums and Bob Miller on bass fiddle – Gordon and Bob being the older players of the band. Their choice of music included compositions from James Scott Skinner, Phil Cunningham and Elton John to name but a few. This created a pleasing spread of traditional and modern styles, which catered for everybody’s taste.
This relatively new group of players have brought a new angle to the accordion and fiddle scene and are highly recommended to other clubs looking to fill their syllabus for 2001/02 season. Book early though! The old saying ‘I’ll go if you go’ must have done its rounds as several other young players turned up to give support and take part themselves. We had the pleasure of hearing Duncan Hutchison, Graham Turner, Gemma Copland and Ann Laird on accordions, all Keith Dickson students playing with David Ilgunis on piano. Very encouraging to see there is a whole new generation ready to step forward.
Club support from regular musicians included :-
On accordion – John Anderson, Charlie Todd, Jim Paterson, Blair Gardiner, Agnes Hope, Arthur Brown, Amy Johnson and Morgan Leslie.
On keyboard – George Walker, Dorothy Lawson and Keith Dickson.
On drums – Tom hope, Bob Henderson and Eck Williamson.
On fiddle – Gilbert Logan.
As the night was so busy, some musicians opted out of taking centre stage. Thanks go to Ian Graham, Alan Gardiner and David Corner for this.
In the meantime the Club would like to wish everybody all the very best for the Festive Season and into 2001.
January 01
The January meeting got the New Year off to a flying start with the Allan Smith SDB. Allan played a wide variety of jigs, reels, waltzes, pipe marches and Continental music with the assistance of Alec Graham on second accordion, Dorothy Lawson on keyboard, Andy Kain on fiddle and Ian Graham on drums – a great sound from the local five-liece band. Let’s hope we hear more of them in the future.
Supporting players throughout the night, were :-
On accordion – John Anderson, Nelson Callan, Charlie Todd, Jim Paterson, Gordon Walker, Frank Morrison, Elizabeth Black and Morgan Leslie.
Ob keyboard – George Walker.
On drums – Tom Hope and Bob Henderson.
On fiddle – Gilbert Logan
On concertina 0 David corner
On the moothie and mandolin – Ian Murray
Thanks to all the players for taking part.
A special mention should be made of young accordionists Susan and Karen Graham (10 and 7 years respectively) who each played a solo. Both payers are with the Alistair Gillespie School of Music and are growing in confidence all the time. This was a shining example of what the Clubs are all about – well done girls.
February 11 th is the date of the next meeting and the guest artistes are everyone who plays because it’s a Club Night. The Club would like to extend best wishes to Mrs Gardiner who is recovering in hospital after an operation. Mrs Gardiner is a loyal supporter of the Club and very rarely does she miss out on a meeting. Her son Alan informs us she is making good progress. We hope you are back on your feet soon Mrs Gardiner.
