Year 8 No 5 - January 1985
On Tuesday, 11th December, Renfrew (Moorpark) A&F Club held their monthly meeting in the Masonic Hall, Broadloan, Renfrew.
The evening got under way with Committee members Stuart Boal and Archie Gardner giving accordion selections. We then had a young gentleman, who has broadcast with the ‘Wick Scottish’ – Alastair MacDonald. Alastair is at present studying at Glasgow University and we were pleased top have his fine talent on the stage.
We were then entertained by Graeme Johnstone, an up-and-coming accordionist from Coatbridge, who gave his usual polished performance, followed by Damien McLaughlin, a young 12-year-old from Glasgow, who is being tutored by ‘Big Malky’,
Now to our guests artistes for the evening – the well-known Jimmy Blair Accordion Orchestar – who thrilled the large audience with their marvelous playing of Scottish and classical selections, ably led by Gary Blair. Their spot was over too soon, but the members like their tea and after the raffle the second half got under way with Sam McMaster, a stalwart of the Beith Club, playing his three-row button box with Archie Gardner on keyboard.
Next on stage was the only fiddler of the evening, Iain Henderson from East Kilbride, who was joined by the rhythm section of the Blair Orchestra and Iain received appropriate applause for his fine playing. We then had Brenda Cook, playing accordion and the last act before the return of the Orchestra was Jim Thomson from Glasgow who was making his first appearance at the Club.
After some movement of the furniture to accommodate the large number in the Orchestra, the audience were again enthralled by their playing of reels, jigs, polkas and classical and the hour of 11 came all too soon as Stuart Boal drew the proceeding to a close.
Thanks to all who attended, especially Mrs Lola Blair, who must have been proud of her Orchestra’s performance.
This was the third meeting of the reformed Club in Renfrew and a warm welcome will be extended to any musician who wishes to come along and give us a tune.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday, 12th February, with Alan Roy as the guest.
