Year 3 No 3 - November 1979
Dumfries Accordion Club held the first meeting of the season in Oughton’s on Tuesday, 16th October, when guest artistes for the evening were The Tartan Lads. These two talented entertainers are always very popular and certainly started the season off with a swing. A capacity audience joined in the varied selection of Country and Western and Scottish songs with great enthusiasm.
Local players during the evening were – Willie McRobert (fiddle), Alan Henderson, Jimmy Edwards, Katrina MacDonald, Ernie and Willie Curries, John Douglas and Tony Dalton all on accordions. It was also nice to welcome back Steven Tait who is now at College in Glasgow.
Many thanks to Sandy McLellan, accordion, and John Douglas, accordion, who provided excellent musical backing. To add to the variety, it was a please to welcome Pipe Sergeant Ian Clowe, who surely must rate as one of the finest pipers around ; also to welcome two boys from the Folk Club being held nearly, namely Sandy and Jimmy, who willingly have us a selection of traditional tunes on guitar and mandolin.
Normally the Club resumes in September, but this year we had the pleasure of playing host to the BBC for two recordings in the ‘TTF’ series. Our regular members were given the opportunity of hearing two great bands – Ronnie Easton and Fraser McGlynn. This was Ronnie’s final broadcast before moving to Birmingham, and I’m sure that we all agree that he will be sadly missed. However, he has assured us of frequent return visits to the area.
Guest artistes on 11th December will be Iain MacPhail’s Broadcasting Band.
