Lairg’s popular one day traditional……..

The Scottish Shindig
by Ewan Galloway
One Sunday evening on a visit to West Barnes Inn, the life of Ewan Galloway was about to be changed forever. He saw the talented Davie Patrick playing The Dambusters March and decided that he wanted to play the accordion. He had already been playing keyboard at Eyemouth High School since starting there two years previously. Ewan asked his parents for an accordion for his Christmas present. He was only 14 years old at the time. In the March, he became a pupil of john Leslie from Dunbar. His music went from strength to strength under John’s guidance. He started to play alongside Alistair Laing at West Barnes Inn on Sunday nights learning to play second box as well as improving his lead box skills. Two years later Davie Patrick passed away but not before encouraging Ewan to carry on with his playing, in fact, Ewan was given the chance of buying Davie’s accordion which he now plays at all his events.
In 2009 Ewan had the chance to play for a charity dance at Foulden which became the start of his own Scottish Dance Band. He teamed up with Ian Anderson, Robin Hamilton and Tam Rankin, who have continued to encourage and support him, playing at many different events with him.
In 2010 Ewan met Graeme Munro and Shauna Flockhart and soon got the chance to play second box for Graeme. When Graeme passed an audition for ‘Take the Floor’ it was Ewan who was asked to play in the band. This was an experience of a lifetime for Ewan as it was his first ever trip to a recording studio. Whilst playing with Graeme he met drummer Johnny Bridges. Ewan quite often uses Johnny in his band.
2010 was the year everything began to really happen for Ewan. With the help of a loan from The Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust, Ewan created his debut CD, Perfect Timing. Derek Hamilton was his record producer. Out just before Christmas, the sales rocketed with over 300 CDs being sold in the first three months. Ewan is now organizing his second CD – a tribute to Davie Patrick. He is hoping to have it released in October, about the same time that he has been asked to take part in the Shetland A&F Festival. Ewan has also applied to ‘Take the Floor’ and is hoping to have an audition for his band to take part in the show. If you want to keep tract of what Ewan is up to go to his website www.ewangallowaysdb.co.uk and check out his events page
A few weeks ago Karin Ingram approached Ewan and asked him if he would be interested in presenting a brand new show on the Internet Radio channel TD1Radio, which is broadcast from Galashiels. Ewan jumped at the chance and his first broadcast went on the air on Saturday 18th June. The show is pure Scottish dance music, having a very appropriate name of ‘The Scottish shindig’. The show has attracted an international audience with listeners from the USA to Norway regularly listening in. He has had fantastic feedback with many comments left on the new Facebook page, as well as e-mails and telephone calls arriving in to the Radio station. Ewan is planning to highlight the various Accordion and Fiddle Clubs on his show by interviewing Committee members as well as possibly recording some music from the Club nights to play on his show. This will be a great source of advertising for the B&F Clubs which really deserve to be in the limelight. He will also be playing new CD releases, interviewing bandleaders and telling people about events going on.
To tune in to Ewan just log on to the Internet, go to www.TD1Radio.com and listen from 6 – 8pm each Saturday evening. If you miss it, or even want to listen to it again, you can click on the Listen Again feature button. If you want Ewan to promote your event, CD or anything else Scottish on the air, just e-mail him on [email protected]
