41st Annual NAAFC Festival – March 2015
by
The Festival was a hive of activity yet again this year. It is one of the delightful highlights of the calendar year where we all come together to meet old friends, make new friends, listen to some quality performances from young and old alike. At the concert at the end you can hear the winners yet again show their amazing talent, and many take the chance to sit in and just enjoy. And of course then there’s the Let Your Hair Down Dance at the end of the evening. This year the music was delivered by the wonderful Iain Anderson SDB. If you weren’t there you definitely missed out!!

Gordon Young
by Charlie Todd
Genial, humorous and irrepressibly cheerful are words which aptly describe drummer Gordon Young from Balerno. Not only has Gordon appeared with many of the country’s top dance bands but his services as compere and M.C. are constantly in demand by organizations such as the Shetland Accordion and Fiddle Festival and ourselves, the N.A.A.F.C., at our Annual Presentation Luncheon and Celebrity Accordion and Fiddle Club (to give it its full title).
Gordon’s love of Scottish Dance music started, not as you might imagine with a drum kit, but at an early age when he was sent along to the Scout Hall in Juniper Green to join a Country Dance Class led by the legendary Captain Jimmy Bain. The music for dancing was provided by 78 rpm records of all the top bands of the day (Jimmy Shand, Jim Cameron, Adam Rennie and later on Ian Powrie, Andrew Rankine etc) played on a gramophone. This was coupled with encouragement from his parents who greatly enjoyed listening to the dance music on the radio on a Saturday night.
Gordon’s brother, Archie, was 10 years his senior and played in the local Boys’ Brigade Pipe Band. He brought home a pair of drumsticks and a wooden practice block which Gordon battered away on when the dance music was on. Later on he went to Colinton and Currie Pipe Band but it was to be another 30 years before he made it into Glencorse Pipe Band himself.
It was as a 16 year old at the Scottish Country Dancing in Princes Street Gardens, that Gordon met accordionist Jim Nicholson who said he was looking for a drummer. He stretched the truth slightly and said he played drums a bit and so was invited to go for an addition the following week. He could hardly appear with a pair of sticks and a practice pad so showing a touch of enterprise he hired a snare drum from Mev Taylor’s Music Shop, sat the audition and the boys in the band seemed to like what he did. The rest, as they say, is history.
The line-up was Jim on lead accordion, Gordon Bennet on second box, Roy Dick on fiddle, Ken MacDonald on piano and Gordon on drums. The band played mainly for Scottish Country Dancing initially all over the Lothians and then further afield with frequent trips to England. The band had a change of second box player and they were joined by a young man who was a pupil of Chrissie Leatham – Iain MacPhail, who was destined to go on to great things, making his first venture into the Scottish Dance music world. When Jim left the band, Roy took it over as ‘The Strathedin Dance Band’ until his untimely death. In 1965 Ken retired, leaving Iain and Gordon who were joined by Allan Johnston on fiddle, Davy Flockhart on piano and Robin Brock on bass. The latter three had played in Jim Johnstone’s Band and their experience was invaluable. Gordon was thus the new band’s first drummer, something of which he remains very proud to this day. The Iain MacPhail SDB passed their B.B.C. audition and did their first broadcast in 1972.
Gordon’s next move was to fulfill one of his ambitions. He had heard several broadcasts of the Ian Holmes band and had been very impressed by the sound and Ian’s playing in particular. He was therefore delighted when late in 1972 Ian asked him to join the band. One of their early engagements was from B.B.C. Glasgow which Gordon was nervous about. However the boys in the band Ian, Bob McNeillie (second box), Kenny Wilson (fiddle), Bill Hendry (piano) and Stan Saunders (bass) made him feel relaxed and he thoroughly enjoyed the tune. Gordon played with the Holmes band until 1978 and very much enjoyed his time with them.
This was followed by a brief spell with Jim Johnstone’s band. Numerous dances, concerts, radio work and some T.V. work namely, ‘Songs of Scotland’ and a never to be forgotten live Hogmanay Show from His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen. Also around this time Gordon was approached by Jim MacLeod to help him out as his own drummer was unwell. There followed many super nights at the Dunblane Hydro, the ‘On Tour’ series for the BBC produced by Ben Lyons at venues throughout Scotland and two series of ‘The Jim MacLeod Show’ for Grampian Television. And as if that weren’t enough he also played with Jimmy Blue a bit at this time. He particularly remembers a week at Ayr Gaiety where the band was on stage for the whole show with Andy Stewart, Helen McArthur and John Shirra.
In the early 80’s Gordon met Sandy Nixon and he was to play in Sandy’s band for over twenty years and form a friendship that is still going strong. The band has played all over the UK, from Cornwall to Shetland, with numerous trips to exotic locations along the way such as the USA, Canada, Indonesia, Korea and many other countries in Europe – not forgetting Auchendinny.
Gordon makes no secret about his love for Shetland, its people and its music. He first visited Shetland away back in 1969 as a member of the great Bert Shorthouse Band in a show with singing legends Anne and Laura Brand. Since then he has been lucky enough to attend most of the Accordion and Fiddle Festivals as well as frequent visits for the Up Helly Aa celebrations. He is delighted to have made so many friends in Shetland and looks forward to many more visits to the Northern Isles.
Although notionally ‘semi-retired’ Gordon continues to enjoy playing and is grateful to be asked to have tune with such talented people as Charlie Kirkpatrick, Derek Hamilton, Lindsay Weir, Ian Cruickshank, Jack Delaney and many more. He still holds the view that he started out with all those years ago – “the best place to listen to a Scottish Dance Band is sitting right in the middle of it”. Guesting with Charlie and Lindsay at Clubs, as well as dropping in to Newtongrange, Haddington. Campsie, Peebles and Mauchline when time permits, lets him enjoy the social side of the Club scene.
Gordon has made a long and valuable contribution to Scottish Dance Music, playing with some of the best and making his mark. As a compere and M.C. he continues to present a polished and seemingly effortless performance based on his years of experience and knowledge of the scene and its people. He is indeed a very worthy Guest of Honour at our gathering in June.
In Memory
Sandy Anderson
Sandy Anderson, the well-known Scottish Dance Band leader for over 50 years and ex Central Farmers Sales Representative for over 35 years, sadly passed away on 7th February 2015.
Sandy came from a very musical family and started playing the button-key accordion with his younger sister Ena on mouth-organ and younger brother Billy on piano accordion. The Anderson Trio, as they were called, was in great demand at East Fife village hall concerts.
Sandy joined The Jack Stalker Band in the early fifties and formed his own band at the age of 20. He had an incredible ear for music and despite never having had a music lesson he played every reel and jig with notable style and an impeccable timing and tempo much appreciated during Scottish Country Dances and Hunt and High Society Balls. Sandy was greatly inspired by the late Sir Jimmy Shand who brought him his much loved and faithful, reliable Shand Morino accordion from Germany in 1959. In 1969 Dave Barrie, pianist and Tom Gatherum, drummer, joined Sandy’s band and they played as a Trio for over 30 years forging a great relationship.
His work made him well known in the farming community in Fife, Tayside, Lothians and Borders. Indeed Sandy played at countless farming family celebrations from 21st parties to weddings, along with 80th and 90th birthdays.
Sandy’s personality, his affectionate smile and infectious laughter will be missed by many, none more so than his wife Nancy, his daughter Joyce, and grandson Stuart.
Margaret Smith (21/07/1936 – 23/01/2015)
It was with great sadness that we heard of Margaret’s passing. Margaret, along with husband George, and Gibby Lang founded The Newtongrange Club in October 1977. Many of today’s musicians will have been encouraged by Margaret, both in playing at the Club and taking part in the Competitions.
Over the 35 years of their leadership they built it into a very successful Club. Among the special events they organised were parties for the 10th abd 21st anniversaries, attended by many well-respected names including Joan and Jimmy Blue, Norrie and Sheila Williams, Ken Mutch and Robbie shepherd to name but a few. They also held a ‘This Is Your Life’ for Jim Johnstone, inviting a host of great musicians to appear.
Margaret and George were very keen dancers and held regular supper dances. Being great friends with the great bandleader Jim Johnstone they set up dance classes with Jim providing the music. When Robbie Shepherd wrote his book ‘Let’s Have a Ceilidh’, Margaret was one of the two ladies who assisted with the dance instructions.
Margaret and George were also regular visitors to Mull, and became great friends with Bobby MacLeod over the years, spending many happy hours in the Mishnish enjoying music, craic and no doubt a few drams.
Apart from music and dancing Margaret loved floral art, which she taught and judged at flower shows. As in all things she did, she was a total perfectionist.
Due to ill health both spent some time in hospital until George passed away in October 2012. Margaret then moved to a nursing home in Wallyford, which allowed her to resume regular attendance at the Club she had helped to establish
