MacKenzie, P/M John M. B.E.M.
(1922 – 1996)
Born in Campbeltown in 1922, John received his first piping lessons from the late Neil Campbell. He joined the A&SH in 1938 and served for 14 years, six of these as P/M and Instructor at the Scottish Command School of Piping in Edinburgh. In Campbeltown he founded the Kintyre Piping Society and tutored the A.T.C. Pipe Band. In 1953 he emigrated to Northern Rhodesia, returning to Scotland to take up an appointment with the MOD. In 1964 he was appointed as P/M Instructor at the famous Queen Victoria School, Dunblane. In the field of solo piping he was successful in winning the supreme awards at most of the major Gatherings. Awarded the B.E.M. in 1987 he died in 1996.
