Year 7 No 1 September 1983
The guest artistes at the last Peebles club night for this season were The Wallochmor Ceilidh Band and there was an excellent turn-out of both players and listeners.
Accordionists throughout the evening were Angus Oliver, Graham Crozier, Craig McCallum, David Scott, Davie Gibson, Catherine Scott, Owen Wright, Andrew Hennesay, Duncan Campbell, and Bob McMath.
Drummers were Billy Johnston, Bill Weir, Alex Dunnet, Jin Dewar and Alastair MacBeth. On fiddle were Annie Robertson and John Houston. Pianists were Dorothy Lawson and Dorothy Mathers. The Roger Dobson Band also played a number of selections.
The evening started with Almanac (Angus Oliver on accordion, Billy Johnston on drums and Henry White, vocalist) – a local Trio who gave a stirring selection to get the evening off to a grand start.
During the evening a shield for the most promising youngster (donated by Peebles Ex-Servicemen’s Club) was presented to Craig McCallum from Penicuik – Craig has been a faithful attender at Peebles during this season and shows great musical talent, very well done Craig.
The audience were then treated to fine and immaculate playing from The Wallochmore C.B. (minus Freeland Barbour who was marooned in Rothesay!) – the tempos ranged from Gaelic waltzes to rousing reels, and all too soon it was time for the final stramash.
Peebles is pleased to have has such a successful season and we all look forward to the new season starting on 29th September, when guest artistes will be John Huband and the Tayside Sound. Our Annual Dance is to be held on 27th May when the music will be supplied by the Jim Johnstone Band.

Peebles A&F Club held the opening meeting of the new season on Thursday, 29th September. John Huband and the Tayside Sound were the guest artistes. John Laidlaw on first accordion and Ian Graham on second with Jim Dewar on drums started the evening and soon had the toes of the very large audience tapping.
Other accordionists throughout the evening were – David Hume, Alistair McLeod, Charlie Todd, Peter Wood, David Scott, Jim Bruce, Alan Gardiner, Catherine Scott, John Anderson, Jim Sharp, Alistair Edmondson, Ronnie Johnston, Craig McCallum, Gordon Wardlaw and Gordon Hoggan from Edinburgh A&F Club, and last but by no means least was Bill Crookston complete with ‘jug’ who got a tremendous ovation from the Club members and a mention from John Huband himself.
On drums we had Jim Dewar, Alastair MacBeth, Alec Dunnet, Ian Graham, Bob Henderson, Neil Hutton and Sandra Logue with Andrew Knight on fiddle and Dorothy Lawson on keyboard to complete the line-up of talent for the evening.
Guest artiste time and what a great treat in store from John Huband and the Tayside Sound. Jigs, reels, waltzes and even jazz enthralled the audience. What a marvelous sound, to which we could have listened for hours. At the start of his second session John introduced us to a pupil of his, a lovely little lass called Deirdre Adamson, aged 10, who has only been playing the accordion for two years and has been a pupil of John for one year. A wee lass with big talent and great potential.
So a great start to the Club’s new season and we look forward to a large audience on 27th October when Addie Harper and the Wick Trio are the guest artistes.

The October meeting of Peebles A&F Club was held on the 27th in Peebles Ex-Servicemen’s Club. A large audience was present.
John Laidlaw on first accordion started the evening with Jim Dewar on drums. Other accorionists were – David Scott, Davie Coke, Craig McCallum, John Anderson, Catherine Scott, Colin Brown, Angus Oliver, Bill Crookston, Douglas Scott, and making his first appearance at the Club , Owen Fielding with his sister Marie on fiddle. Others on fiddle for the evening were regulars Annie Robertson and Jock Houston. Alastair MacBeth, Alec Dunnet, Jim Dewar and Billy Johnstone were the drummers.
The fine playing of these talented folk got us into fine fettle for the guest artistes The Addie Harper Trio from Wick.
An excellent and very varied programme of music followed which featured Addie on the Hawaiian guitar with Addie Jnr on accordion and Isobel on keyboard.
A very enjoyable evening was brought to a close with a grand stramash.
We will be welcoming the Addie Harper Trio back on 25th May, 1984, when they will provide the music for our Annual Dance.
The next Club meeting will be on 24th November when Perth Club entertains. Please note earlier time of 7.30pm.

Year 7 No 4 December 1983
Peebles A&F Club held their regular monthly meeting on 24th November at the earlier than usual time on 7.30 which may have accounted for the drop in numbers.
As usual the evening got off to a fine start with our resident compere John Laidlaw on first accordion and Alex Dunnet on drums.
Other accordionists for the evening were as follows – Craig McCallum, Owen Fielding, Charlie Todd, Jim Bruce, Peter Wood, David Scott, Neil Caul, Calum Smith, Jim sharp, Owen Wright, Davie Coke, Angus Oliver and Dorothy Lawson.
Drummers for the evening were the aforementioned Alex Dunnet, Alastair MacBeth and Billy Johnston. On keyboard were Dorothy Lawson and Iain Wilson and making her second appearance at the Club was young Marie Fielding on fiddle.
The combined talents of all these folk kept us well entertained for the first half of the evening.
After the break for stovies and drawing the raffle, John introduced our guests for the second half. ‘Perth Club Entertains’ was the title for the evening and entertain us in fine style they did. Jimmy Blue was compere and throughout the second half introduced, on accordion, Simon Howie, Kirsty Bisset, Alan Kindness, Bill Black, Neil Caul and, of course, Jimmy himself.
The highlight of the evening for me was Jimmy playing the ‘Jacqueline Waltz.’ Sheer magic. On keyboard for Perth was Jimmy’s wife Joan and Angus Howie with Peter Mutch on drums and Jim Brown on fiddle.
A very enjoyable evening followed and ended with a grand stramash which looked set to carry on into the wee sma’ hours with the audience clapping and hooching good style.
Our next meeting takes the form of a Christmas Dance with Iain MacPhail’s Band providing the music. So hurry up if you want tickets. I think there are still a few left.
The first meeting of the New Year takes place as usual in the Ex-Servicemen’s Club on Thursday, 26th January, 1984 with the Lothian Broadcasting Band as the guest artistes.

Friday, 16th December, saw the Peebles Ex-Servicemen’s Club as the venue for Peebles A&F Club’s Christmas supper Dance. This was a new innovation for the Club, but, judging by the success of the evening, it will not be the last. 140 people attended and after an excellent supper, provided by R. Reid and his team of helpers, dancing commenced to the music of Iain MacPhail and his Band.
Space on the dance floor was at a premium which can be attributed to the excellence of the band.
After a short interval to draw the raffle and let the bad have a well-earned rest, dancing re-commenced.
The dance was scheduled to finish at 1am, but I am sure the band would not have needed any coaxing to play on for another hour or so and the dancers would have needed no coaxing at all. However, in fairness to the Club staff, the evening finally came to a close around 1.15am with the last waltz. An excellent evening with a terrific band.
The first meeting of the New Year is on 26th January in the Ex-Servicemen’s Club with the Lothian Broadcasting band as the guests.

Fiddle – Marie Fielding.
Keyboard – Dorothy Lawson
