The main features in the above issue were as follows (this is not a comprehensive detail of all it contained. The Club reports, in particular, are too time-consuming at this stage to retype).
Editorial
It’s been a busy time in January and February. The brave have ventured up to Shetland for Up Helly Aa, the Club season is in full swing, Windygates Club had another successful Shand Morino Gathering, and now we’re all gearing up for the NAAFC Festival, which this year is taking place in Inshyra Grange.
We have a bumper crop of reports again. Thank you to everyone who contributes both the reports and the photographs, but please could we ask that you keep the report succinct, but interesting. We don’t really need the titles of every tune played, nor permutations of players playing them! Sorry to harp on about this again, but I really don’t want to have to start cutting bits out of reports that you’ve spent valuable time writing. Club news is the mainstay of the magazine, and will always be given priority, but that means that sometimes we haven’t as much space for other articles as we would like. Please keep sending your reports, but be concise!

KODA – Keepin’ it Reel
by
The October 1999 issue of the B&F published an article entitled ‘The High Road to Linton’ which celebrated the release of the first KODA (then known as The Keith Dickson Accordion Orchestra) CD Mist in the Glen. The feature described how the band had developed from an ‘Accordion Orchestra’ since its formation in 1987 to a ‘Scottish Showband’ in 1999, as well as offering a detailed account of the musical family history of Musical Director Keith Dickson.
Nearly ten years on, the band has just released their fourth CD “Keepin’ it Reel”. So let’s take this opportunity to find out what’s been happening with this group of young musicians during the past ten years. Here’s some highlights.....
KODA Diary 1999 – 2009
1999
Recorded our debut CD “Mist in the Glen” at Ca Va Studios in Glasgow. Travelled to Yvetot, Normandy where we performed at a few local events and were looked after by a group of good natured nuns. Performed at a concert in Dumfries with the Gifhorn Accordion Orchestra from Germany who are visiting Scotland.
2000
Played at “Danny Kyle’s Open Stage” at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections and received a “Danny Award” (being voted one of the six top performers). Visited Shetland in July, performing with Canadian fiddler Rudi Meeks in Mid Yell Hall and with Filska and Da Fustra at the Clickimin Centre, Lerwick. Nearly all freeze to death during an afternoon open air summer performance at Lerwick Pier.
2001
Decided to shorten our long winded name to KODA (an anagram of our name’s initials) and performed at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall (Celtic Connections) with Alasdair Fraser. Performed at a Variety Show with the Iain MacPhail Band at the Brunton Theatre, Musselburgh and at the Ceilidh Tent at T in the Park for the first time.
Invited to take part at the “London Accordion Festival” held in Wembley Conference Centre.
2002
Travelled to the European Accordion Festival in Prague where our unique sound surprises many listeners. The organisers appear somewhat confused with our approach and present us with a “Special Award”.
Released our second CD “Tight Squeeze” at the Shetland Accordion and Fiddle Festival. Our piper Niall transports our instruments in a van via the ferry and takes about a week to get home.
2003
The current band line up performed their final gig at T in the Park. The new band line up play their first gigs at Peebles Arts Festival and the first Biggar Little Festival.
2004
Our “new look” band visit the NAO UK Accordion Championships held in Scarborough winning the “Accordion Showband” and “Entertainment” sections.
Performed at a concert in Lanark with a “Big Band” of young musicians from near Hanover.
Box and Fiddle kindly offers us a regular column, which keeps readers informed about the band’s activities.
2005
Performed at a particularly lively Ceilidh Tent at T in the Park and released our third CD “Alternative Frequency” at a Youth Concert in Hexham.
Travelled to Hanover and perform with the “Big Band” who visited Lanark last year. It’s particularly hot so we take the opportunity to cool off at the fountain in Herrenhausen Gardens.
2006
Visited N. Ireland and play at an event in Ballymoney Town Hall with the Dunloy Accordion Band who are celebrating their 50th Anniversary. Received a BAFFI Award for “CD of the Year”. Performed at a Duke of Edinburgh Award Concert at the EICC where Gemma mistakes HRH The Earl of Wessex for security and asks him directions to our dressing room….however HRH jokes about it with us later and takes a copy of our CD for Mum.
2007
Presented with ”South Lanarkshire Music Group of the Year” award. Visited Germany in July for a series of concerts. Dreadful sea crossing to Amsterdam has most of the band singing down the toilet. However, we had a great time once we arrived in Germany, where we even go canoeing on the River Eider.
2008
Performed at a lively “Festival Fling” held as part of the “Highlands and Islands Music and Dance Festival” in Oban.
We manage to keep dry at T in the Park but get soaked a week later at Biggar Show.
Recorded our fourth CD “Keepin’ it Reel” at Park Lane Studios, Glasgow.
We’re well received at the Boghall and Bathgate Caledonia Pipe Band Christmas Concert.
2009
Released our new album at a CD Launch Ceilidh Party in Biggar.
