Musings

An Honour Indeed
As part of a group, I was invited to play at Buckingham Palace. With kilt buffer down, Union Jack underpants looked out and my best Queen’s English diction tuned in, off I trotted soiuth to the Palace.
It was the hottest day in June since 1976 and they never had the foresighgt to install air-conditioning in the palace back in 1703. Full dress kilts are not the best for such a heat-wave in the captivity of the palace holding pens.
This was the first Scottish music performed in the palace for a very long time and our after dinner performance was as grand as the royal surroundings. A Scottish squad of c60 including accordionists, fiddlers, pipers, choir, pianist, bass player and dancers were glued together with the poems and songs of Robert Lovie. It was as tartan as tartan gets and Price Charles, Camilla and the other 350 multi-national guests lapped it up.
We were then lined up for the VIPs to prod us, as they desired. As one colleague said, “I now know what the pandas feel like!” A little cynical perhaps, but unfortunately the hospitality offered during this long exhausting day felt less than the corgi’s usual package so by this point our patience had diminished.
Nonetheless, it was a unique experience and I was delighted to have been included in such a cast of extremely talented young performers and to play in such surroundings and circumstance. An honour indeed…..?

The Celebrity Luncheon
by Pia Walker
An amazing 172 folk turned up at the Huntingtower Hotel in Perth on the last Sunday in june at what has become the annual highlight for many people involved with the NAAFC and the Club scene. This year a record number of past Guests of Honour attended – almost 20!
The afternoon included a 3-course meal followed by the BAFFIs and Guests of Honour awards and in between the various awards we had entertainment from selected musicians with Billy Anderson the MC. We were celebrating Violet Tulloch, Alasdair MacLeod and George Darling as Guests of Honour while a special lifetime membership certificate, together with a crystal decanter and something to put into it, was presented by Take the Floor’s Gary Innes to our very own Robbie Shepherd.
The afternoon was organised by Charlie Kirkpatrick and the music by Iain Cathcart, with the rest of the Committee helping wherever necessary. Margo MacLennan, assisted by Marina Bruce, ensured that all took part in the raffle! Nicol McLaren introduced the event and presented the Guests of Honour with their engraved crystal bowls.
This is the afternoon where the clubs can get together from all over the country, mingle, exchange ideas and just pass the time of day with each other. Table-hopping between courses is frequent as old friends meet and the atmosphere is one of informal fun and celebration with the music at the highest professional level.
Another part of the afternoon is the BAFFIs. This year many Clubs and many readers jumped at the chance to send in their votes for the various categories. As mentioned in the June magazine it came down to four nominations in each category and from those four a winner is chosen and presented with a crystal plaque.
The Winners were :
Club Supporter of the Year – Maxine Cummings (presented by Robbie Shepherd)
CD of the Year – His Master Moothie (Jake MacKay & Friends) (presented by Catriona MacLeod)
Club of the Year – Campsie (Presented by Joan Blue)
Guest Artiste of the Year – John Morgan (presented by Drew Tulloch)
I think we could all have carried on for much longer, but all good things must come to an end and the afternoon ended early evening with a stramash. I did, however, hear that ‘a wee party’ started up later by the guests staying over at the hotel.
Preparation for next year will start in April, when you readers and clubs start sending in your BAFFI nominations.
