Bobby Abbott (28.04.37 – 21.11.16)
From the insert of Bobby’s CD ‘Welcome to Glensharragh’
My fascination with Pipe Bands started at a very early age. As the years passed, I marveled at the number of tunes that were composed for the pipes. I decided to try my hand at composing and my first tentative effort consisted of two 6/8 marches which I submitted to the College of Piping. One was accepted and I thought I had achieved my aims.
Some years afterwards I was approached by several Pipe Bands to compose music for the pipes. That is when I began to recognize the need to bring out fresh tunes, some with a difference, and submit them to the various bands.
On this album, many of the tunes are dedicated to the piping world, and I hope thy bring pleasure to the listener whether they be musician or otherwise.
Bobby was a talented 5 row accordionist, who like many didn't leave his story behind. As indicated above he was a talented composer, often in the pipe idiom. Local Grade 1 Pipe Band Boghall & Bathgate Caledonia used many of his compositions in their competition medleys - one title The Big Road Brusher springs to mind. At various time he had his own band but also played with Dick Black's band for a time. He was a talented user of the electronic accordion and competent in Scottish, modern ballroom and sequence dancing, playing for dances and dance classes for many years.
Below we have Bobby Abbott, Jack McLeish, Dick Black and ?
