Year 35 No 06 – February 2011
Seghill is situated in South East Northumberland, six miles from Whitley Bay. It is an old mining village with a population of 4,000, a very close and friendly community where all the old traditions are still celebrated every year.
Every Christmas all senior citizens are provided with a free meal and entertainment, also Mr Walton Brown (former Director of the Seghill Coal company) left a legacy whereby all the ladies over 80 years of age get a share of the profits from that investment.
Every New Year’s Day the Comrades Club, home of the Accordion Club, raises money for the Cancer Wards of the North Tyneside Hospital.
The Club was formed six or sever years ago by members of the now defunct Blyth Valley Accordion Band. Meeting are held every Tuesday night from 7.30pm until 11pm.
The format is that from 7.30 to 8.30 members play as a band, the rest of the evening is for solo players up to 10.30pm, finishing off with a stramash. Everyone is welcome, so if you are down this way pop in, entry is free with cheese and biscuits and pickled onions.
