Year 2 No 1 October 1978
Biggar Club held their final meeting of the season in the Clydesdale Hotel on Monday, 10th April. Despite the artic conditions the club was again well supported by both players and audience. Once again our Secretary John Anderson arranged and introduced players.
Guests for the evening were the Lothian Scottish Dance Band who gave us a fine selection of music to keep our toes tapping. At the end of the evening they were joined by all the players for a grand stramash ; a grand way to end a season of first class entertainment at the Biggar Club. We have had Walter Perrie, Sean Maguire, Paddy Neary, Currie Brothers, Ian Holmes & Kenny Wilson, Iain MacPhail Band, Alan Coulson Trio and the Lothian Band and of course all the local lads who appear each month and if they don’t mind me saying here they have gone from strength to strength as the season has progressed, each one giving a fine display of their musical talents which I add is very high.
Players on the night – mine host Alex (Sandy) MacArthur, John Anderson (Biggar), Douglas and Elaine Hastie, aged 11 and 9, who have made three appearances at the Club, amd Alex and Ian Graham, all from Carluke, Allan Smith, Kirkfieldbank, John Laidlaw, Dougie Scott (Peebles) William Anderson (Broughton), all accordions. John Pottinger (Biggar), Rob Dickson (Dolphinton) and Alistair McBeth (Peebles) drums.
Adam Anderson (Broughton) piano, Ena Wilson from the Lothian Band also gave us a few spots on piano and Rab Carruthers, bass.
The Club had a successful dance on 31st March in the Municipal Hall. Bobby Crowe’s Band provided the music for the evening.
Next season starts off on 11th September when guests will be John McGregor and his SDB and on 9th October guests will be Bill Black and Family.

Biggar Club held their first meeting of the season in the Clydesdale, Hotel Biggar, on Monday 11th September. As always the venue was filled to capacity as mine host Alex MacArthur got things under way with some fine selections. (He has a new tape on release at the moment and it sounds very good).
Our Secretary, John Anderson, did the compering aided by ‘Sandy’ and gave a warm welcome to two members of the Dundee Club who had travelled through to hear for themselves the fine quality of the Biggar musicians.
Guests for the night were John McGregor’s SDB who put on two fine performances and headed the stramash at the end. Other players were : accordions, Alex MacArthur, John Anderson (Biggar), John Laidlaw (Peebles), Ian and Alex Graham (Carluke), Nelson Callan (Wishaw), Allan Smith (Kirkfieldbank), William Anderson (Broughton) accordion and bass. Drums John Pottinger (Biggar), Rob Dickson (Dolphinton), Alistair McBeth (Peebles) and a newcomer to our club Alex Dunnet (Peebles). Adam Anderson, as usual, gave a fine performance on keyboard. Another first timer to the Club Iain Henderson, East Kilbride. The fiddler side of our Club is a bit weak.
So once again Biggar Club can look forward to some of the best Scottish music for the winter months ahead with the Black Family from Stanley, Perth on 9th October as guests.

Biggar Club held their October meeting in the Clydesdale Hotel, Biggar, on Monday 9th October. A full house welcomed the guests for the evening, the Black Family from Stanley, Perth.
Bill introduced each member of his family to the audience, Duncan (11), the junior member, whose fingers danced over the keys like a fully-fledged master of the box ; Robert (14) came next and he too showed his expert playing of all types of accordion music proving how he has swept the boards at the competitions. Not to be outdone, father Bill, also gave us a fine selection of music in his slick, perfect style, he also demonstrated he was just as happy on the fiddle as on the box. Mother accompanied all on the keyboard. All round a fine, talented family and a great credit to the art.
A full house of musicians tuned out but again only one fiddler, Bobby Stenhouse from Galalshiels. On accordions Betty and Andrew from Bonnyrigg, John Laidlaw and Dougie Scott, Peebles, Alex Graham, Carluke, Nelson Callan, Wishaw, Gary Blair and Adrian Hannah, Glasgow. Mine host Alex MacArthur was in his usual fine form both on box and patter, incidentally, his new LP just out is worth buying, I know, I’ve heard it.
John Anderson, Secretary, did his turn also as MC for the evening. Drummers were Alistair McBeth, Peebles, John Pottinger, Biggar, Rob Dickson, Dolphinton, bass – William Anderson and brother Adam on keyboard from Broughton, who all gave fine performances to an enthuastic audience.
This fine session came to a late close with the members joining the Blacks for a grand stramash.
Next month’s guest is Dave Stewart from Kirriemuir, another great night for all.

Biggar Club held their November meeting on the 13th in the Clydesdale Hotel. Once again it was a full house and a grand variety of players of fiddle, accordion, drums and as a special treat, pipes. Elaine and Douglas Hastie from Carluke, our junior duo, gave us a fine duet in the first half and followed by solos in the second half. I must say these two have gained experience and can now put on a grand show for 9 and 11 year olds.
Our regulars, John Anderson, John Laidlaw, Ian Graham, Jim Anderson Nelson Callan and Allan Smith, all on accordions, were in their usual fine fettle, each giving an impressive performance, backed by John Pottinger and Rob Dickson on drums, William Anderson on bass and Adam Anderson, keyboard, who kept the rhythm section up to scratch. The Anderson family, Jim (father) and Adam and William (sons) gave us a family selection in the first half showing us there is no need for television in their house to pass the night away.
Guest for the evening was Dave Stewart from Kirriemuir, assisted by Rab Smillie (bass) and Bill Cormack on keyboard in the first half, who soon had the audience swinging with his fine selections. Dave has just returned from a tour of Australia and New Zealand with Jimmy Shand and Peter Morrison and showed us that he does not have to play second box to anyone.
Our Langhaom guests, Walter Beattie (box), Bill Hotson (drums), Archie Park (fiddle and comedy) and Jimmy Flafferty on keyboard, gave us a grand show with Archie Park’s patter and playing going down well with the audience.
Alex MacArthur, our mine host, came on as second box to Dave Stewart in the second half and once again proved a great success.
To round off the evening a grand stramash with all the players and including ‘Auld Land Syne’ by special request of Archie Park. In all a grand night for one and all.

Biggar Club held their December meeting in the Clydesdale Hotel on Monday, 11th December.
As usual, a full house was in attendance with one or two from Penicuik and Newtongrange clubs. Biggar was represented at these Clubs last month and both nights were enjoyable. All are invited to visit the Biggar Club and will always be made welcome.
Our local talent was in fine fettle for the start of the proceedings building up to a climax for our guest for the evening Angus Cameron, accompanied on piano by Bill Cormack, who soon had the audience in his hands with a fine selection of Slow Airs, Jigs, Reels and Marches.
In the second half Billy Craib of the Jim Johnstone Band joined Angus and Bill with Alistair McBeth on drums and again put on a fine show, including some great jazz playing thrown in.
Alex McArthur was in fine form when Ian Wilson and Billy Craib joined him and he played a track of his new LP (hope you have got a copy) and also had the audience in stitches with one of his funny songs.
Also appearing on the nights bill were accordionists – Angus Oliver and John Laidlaw, Peebles, Andrew Stoddart, Penicuik, Ian Graham, Carluke, Allan Smith, Kirkfieldbank, Charles Todd, Carmichael (his first appearance), John Anderson, Biggar, and George King, Gifford.

Biggar Club held their January meeting on Monday 8th. Weather conditions prevented the guest artistes, the Tommy Pringle Trio from Selkirk, appearing. Nevertheless the audience heard a fine selection of our local talent for the evening plus a return visit from our Langholm friend, Archie Park, comedian and fiddler. Why that chap has never had a TV spot I don’t know, his patter is tremendous and his fiddle music spot on. TV scouts take note. Robin Waitt (button accordion) and Walter Beattie (button box) Bill Hotsoun (drums) and wee Albie Tedham on fiddle completed the Langholm contingent.
Locals taking part were John Laidlaw, Ian and Alex Graham, Charles Todd, Jim Anderson, Alex MacArthur, Allan Smith and not forgetting our Secretary John Anderson on accordions. On drums Alistair McBeth and son David ( a first timer), Rob Dickson, John Pottinger and another first timer Tom Meikle of Biggar. Bass, William Anderson. Keyboard our own Adam Anderson and first timer Colin Bell from Sanquhar, also Alec Graham.
Although no guest artiste, the evening was most enjoyable with all giving an excellent performance despite the treacherous conditions outside for the road home.
Next month Jim Johnstone and his Band will be here, so if you want a seat come early.

Biggar Club held their February meeting on Monday, 12th February, in the Clydesdale Hotel.
A full house in both audience and players, 14 accordions, 4 on drums, 4 on keyboard, two on bass and one on pipes made sure this was going to be a great evenings entertainment.
Jim Johnstone and his Band were guest artists and what a refined performance they gave, reels, Continental, waltzes with the ease this band has made its reputation on. ‘Jolly Jim’ as Gerry MacKenzie calls him, was in fine fettle as were the rest of the boys. Their two spots could not be faulted, even Bobby Brown on keyboard gave us a couple of singalong renderings complete with his famous facial expressions, unfortunately, when these boys play time just flies in and all too soon it was stramash time again with Jim and the boys leading the members.
Local personnel taking part were Colin Brown, a young 4-year-old who at this age has mastered the art, let’s hope he sticks in. Ted Brown, Penicuik, Douglas and Elaine Hastie and Alex and Ian Graham, Carluke, Dougie Scott and John Laidlaw, Peebles, Charles Todd, Carmichael, Nelson Callan, Wishaw, William Anderson, Broughton, David Sturgeon, Dalkeith, Alex MacArthur and John Anderson, Biggar all on accordion. John Pottinger, Biggar, Alistair McBeth, Peebles, Rob Dickson, Dolphinton ; keyboard Adam Anderson, Broughton, Iain Wilson, Elvanfoot, John Gibson, Dalkeith. William Anderson and Rab Carruthers, bass ; Davie Ketchin on pipes. Altogether a first-class night’s entertainment at the Biggar Club.
Next month Angus Fitchet is our guest on 12th March. Members please note – tickets for the Club Dance on 27th April are now on sale (Iain MacPhail’s SDB).

Biggar Club held their March meeting in the Clydesdale Hotel on 12th March. A total of 24 musicians entertained the audience to some fine playing.
Our guest for the evening was that well known fiddler and composer Angus Fitchet, accompanied by Ena Wilson from the Lothian Scottish Band, who gave us a fine rendering of Scottish fiddle music at its best.
Like the violin, Angus’s playing matures with age (no offense meant). He really did put on a splendid performance for the appreciative audience.
Newcomers to the Club were Sandy Donald from Symington, Guy Biagia from Newmains and Jim sharp and John McKenzie from St Boswells, all on accordion and Iain Henderson from East Kilbride on fiddle.
Our local talent were in fine form as usual, on accordions, Derek Hamilton, Sandy Donald, Guy Biagai, John Laidlaw, Ian and Alex Graham, Jim Sharp, John McKenzie, Jim Anderson, Alex MacArthur, Allan Smith and John Anderson ; drums, Alistair McBeth, Rob Dickson, Bruce Shaw and John Pottinger ; on keyboard, Adam Anderson, Colin Bell and Ena Wilson ; bass William Anderson and Iain Henderson on fiddle.
Our local talent throughout the year very much improved their standard of playing, not, might I add from a low standard, but from a high standard to excellent, making sure of a first class night’s entertainment at the Biggar club.
Our Secretary, John, gave us a fine impersonation of Les Dawson not on piano but on accordion, but he said it was just not his night.
Next month the Robert Whitehead Band from Alnwick appear at what promises to be a good night. Incidentally, our mine host, Alex MacArthur, is due on ‘Celidhdonia’ very shortly with his Band. It will be well worth tuning in for.
