Year 1 No 2– November 1977
The Glendale A&F Club, based in Wooler, just south of the Scottish Border, now in its fourth successful season, started off its year a month earlier than schedules, to take advantage of the opportunity of a visit by the musician’s musician, Andrew Rankine. This was an entertaining extra night with Andrew showing off some of his own great compositions, including No 1 in the SDB Charts 1977, ‘Donald Ian Rankine.’
The season proper started in October (3rd Thursday of the month) with the swinging sound of guest artiste George Bell’s SDB from Blairgowrie. He played selection after selection of lively original music to the delight of a capacity audience, showing off the talents of second accordionist Dawn Turner and fiddler Melvin Wilson wit brilliant solo spots.
One of the fortes of the Glendale Club is its resident team of musicians, including Robert Whitehead and his Band, Alan Coulson and his Band including the Border Fiddler Geoff Purvis, John Dagg and his Band, Willie Taylor (fiddle), Ian Wilson (drums ex Shand Band) plus a host of others.
These formed the rest of the evening’s entertainment, and in addition to all this the club witnessed the birth of (who knows, perhaps a future great) a new accordionist ; diminutive 9-year-old Ian Hutson who played a Continental waltz and two pipe marches. Ian received a tremendous ovation.
On the lighter side, the Border Fiddler played a fine selection of well-known, in his own words, ‘Welsh Reels’ McGuires, Rattigans and Jackie Coleman!
With our first official night of the season off to a superb start all looks set for an excellent season, in keeping with the three previous ones.
Next month’s guest artiste Bobby Crowe and his Band, 17th November, Black Bull, Wooler.
