Year 16 No 01 September 1992
Biggar held their final meeting of the season on Sunday, 11th April. And what a way to finish.
Heading the line-up for the evening were the Ian Skinner Trio. In kept the large audience happy for the first forty minutes with some fine selections. His medleys were something else. As I said at the beginning, what a finish, great music, well played.
Our locals were in fine fettle, and a few new faces were there to give us a tune, some from as far away as Wick (the Wick fiddler fairly had our toes tapping, a treat to listen to, as were all the following.
On accordion our young player, Angus Lyon from Lamington – great stuff there. Also on top form on accordion were Jimmy Edwards, Charlie Thomson, John Russell, Alan Black, Bob Fortune, Charlie Todd, Ann Wall, Morag Robertson, Donny McGregor, Alan Gardiner, Lindsay Weir, Jason Dove, Fiona Cuthbertson.
On fiddle Roy Stewart, Annie Robertson and Bobby Stenhouse.
Drums Doug Cairns and Charlie Todd.
Keyboard Georhe Walker, Jason Dove and Alan Gardiner.
After refreshments it was back to the Ian Skinner Trio to wind up what I feel was an outstanding evening’s entertainment.
Thanks go to all players, supporters, behind the scene ladies and gentlemen for all the help throughout the season. Thank you.
Telethon 92
Biggar A&F Club held their Telethon Bonanza in Biggar High School Hall on Thursday, 18th June.
A large turnout was there, to spend money on the raffle and the tombola and over £900 was raised. Down on our last effort, but nevertheless a fantastic amount for all concerned.
Our MC as usual John Anderson set the ball rolling by introducing Alan Gardiner and his band who gave us some fine selections and, after their spot, backed piper Davie Ketchin in a variety of tunes ranging from pop to Scottish.
We then had singer Maisie Dickie accompanied by Mary Robb on piano giving us a couple of well-known songs and soon had the audience singing along. Great stuff.
Our regular members were there in force. On accordion, Charlie Thomson, Davie Coke, Angus Lyon, Stewart Couborough, Bob Logan, Fiona Cairns, Charlie Todd, Tom Porteous, Jimmy Edwards and John Anderson.
Keyboard – George Walker.
Drums – Ally McIntyre, Charlie Todd, Alan Gardiner.
Fiddle – Annie Robertson and Gilbert Logan.
Biggar High School’s answer to The Shadows gave us a spot and with all this talent we had a marvelous rewarding evening.
Our thanks go to all the behind the scenes people, the High School, the Jannies, and to all the local, and not so local, businesses who gave for the raffle and the tonbola. Without them it would not have taken place. And finally, you the audience, for taking the rime to come and raise funds for a worthwhile cause.

Biggar Club held their opening meeting in the Biggar Municipal Hall, Biggar, on Sunday 13th September.
To start the season, first on stage were our guests for the evening, Morag Robertson and Frank Henery, Morag on accordion and Frank on acoustic guitar.
Morag and Frank gave us a tour round the world with fine music and singing and a wee bit of audience participation – a duo that is a must to hear, the guitar played the Frank Henery way really compliments Morag’s fine playing – the Continental stuff was great.
Our new season brought us a wealth of talent in our local and not so local players. We even had a singer ably backed by Alan Gardiner and the boys.
On accordion were Angus Lyon, Jean McConnachie, Davie Coke, John Laidlaw, Alan Gardiner, Jason Dove, Charlie Todd and John Anderson.
On fiddle were Annie Robertson, Christine Legge and Gilbert Logan.
Keyboard was played by George Walker, Alan Gardiner and Christine Legge and the drums by Bob Henderson and Charlie Todd.
The singers were Maisie Dickie and young Susan Graham (2 years) making her first appearance singing “You Are My Sunshine”.
After the supper and raffle it was back to Morag and Frank to round off the evening’s entertainment and so successfully starting another year for Biggar Club.

Biggar Club had a good turnout at the October meeting when the guests were the Joe Gordon Trio. Joe on banjo, son Scott on 1st accordion with Ian Muir on 2nd accordion, gave us some fine music. Joe also gave us the pleasure of his singing. Scott and Ian both played some great accordion solos.
The supporting players who came along to join in for a tune were, on accordion Angus Lyon, Charlie Thomson, Davie Coke, Bob Logan, Ian Gracie, Tom Porteous, Anne Wall, John Anderson and Kenneth Johnstone with brother Stevie on keyboard.
On keyboard we had Iain Wilson, George Walker and Dorothy Lawson and on fiddle were Annie Robertson and Gilbert Logan. On bass was Alex Graham and on drums Ian Graham (nice to see Ian back after his ‘go-carting’ accident), Scott Gordon and making his debut at the Club, our very own Tom Hope (keep up the practice Tom).

Biggar held the final meeting of 1992 in the Municipal Hall on Sunday, 13th December.
Top of the bill was the popular Nicol McLaren and his SDB. Lively music, lively band, a good all round selection with even a bit of nostalgia thrown in with some Glenn Millar stuff. A real treat to end the year.
We had one of our regulars missing, Davie Coke from Carluke, whom we heard was in hospital. We all wish him well and a speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with him and hope it’s not too long before he is strapping the box on again.
On accordion – Angus Lyon, Jean McConnachie, Charlie Thomson, Bob Fortune, Ian Graham, Alan Gardiner, John Laidlaw and last but not least John ’the clock’ Anderson.
Keyboard – George Walker, Alex Graham and Iain Wilson.
Drums – Ian Graham, Alan Gardiner and Tom Hope.
Lowland Pipes – Jim McConnachie
Fiddle – Annie Robertson, Emma Rayworth, David Corner and Gilbert Logan.
Concertina – David Corner.
In all, an excellent evening and a grand stramash ended another Club night.

Another full house for our March meeting, and this time a guest artiste with a difference, but more on that later.
Locals were out in force and M.C. John Anderson had a busy time getting them organised. On accordions we had Davie Coke, Alan Gardiner, Ian Graham, Agnes Hope, Jimmy Kirkpatrick, John Laidlaw, Jean McConnachie, Tom Porteous, Morag Robertson, Charlie Thomson, Charlie Todd and Mary Young.
On fiddle were Annie Robertson, Gilbert Logan and Fmma Rayworth.
George Walker and Jean McConnachie played keyboard and Alex Graham the string bass whilst Jim McConnachie played the Lowland pipes. Drumming was in the hands of Brian Thomson, Billy and Jeffrey Goodfelly and Ian Graham.
For the first time ever at the Club, our guests for the evening were an accordion group, the Keith Dickson Accordion Orchestra. Keith, himself a Club regular, was having a somewhat hectic day having driven straight from the studios where he was playing second accordion on Alan Gardiner’s first commercial recording. His troubles were not over yet however, and with the orchestra having given two very creditable and well received performances, Keith received a ‘traditional’ send off to mark his marriage in two days time to our Club M.C.’s daughter, Sheena. We wish them all success and happiness in the future.
