Year 29 No 5 – January 2005
It was standing room only at the Phoenix A&F Club’s November meeting in The Argyll Arms Hotel, Ardrishaig.
The night started off with the home grown talent of Fraser McGlynn, followed by Archie John McVicar. Backing was provided by Ryan McGlynn on drums and Sandy Black on double bass.
Janet Graham from Cumbernauld was next on accordion and a fiddle solo came from Alistair Herron from Bearsden.
The first guest artiste spot was thanks to Colin Garvin, who filled in at the very last minute for Sandy Legget who was suddenly indisposed.
Colin, on accordion, was accompanied by David Gracie, from The Ballochmyle Ceiliodh Band, on keyboard and Bill Buchan, from Charlie Kirkpatrick’s Band, on drums. Despite being thrown in at the deep end, a very professional polished performance was enjoyed by the Phoenix faithful.
The second half kicked off with the magical fiddle of Archie MacAllister accompanied by Ron Pine on guitar. There followed a most magnificent sound supplied by Alec MacAllister on accordion, brother Archie on fiddle, Kevin McGlynn on drums, Sandy Black on double bass and Archie John McVicar.
Archie Lamont, from Mull, was next to entertain the crowd with the fiddle, followed by Johnny Fisher playing 3-row button box.
Another 3-row player ended the second half when Hans Unkles played for the very first time in front of the Phoenix audience. Colin Garvin and his band entertained everyone with a fine selection of traditional Scottish dance music. What a performance!
Next month’s guest artiste will be solo accordionist David Vernon from Edinburgh.
