Year 25 No 02 October 2001
Foot and mouth disease brought our Club to an abrupt end in February with the cancellation of the March and April clubs. Therefore, we were all looking forward to getting started again for the new season.
The Morag Robertson Trio were guest artistes for our opening meeting in September. As ever, Morag was in fine form with some great music and fine stories (mostly at the expense of guitarist Frank Hendry). The other member of the Trio was Frank’s brother John on bass. Other players were a wee bit thin on the ground, but a surprise visit from Da Fustra’s Peter Wood was an added bonus.
Apart from Peter we had :-
On accordion – John Anderson, Charlie Todd and Peter Jardine.
On keyboard – Dorothy Lawson and George Walker
On drums – Bob Henderson, Tom Hope and George Shiels.

Year 25 No 06 February 2002
The new year got underway on 13th January with a great sound from the Tom Orr SDB. This young player of only 15 years of age has a string of achievements including British Under 15 Solo champion, winner of both the Ceilidh and Trio sections at Perth, and also the best Band at Musselburgh. With this pedigree Tom was on top form to provide the listeners with a fine mix of traditional and Continental music. Despite his young age Tom on accordion, with his friends Gillies Crichton on second accordion, Graham Crichton on drums and Keith Dickson on keyboard, had everybody captivated with his modern, lively sound. His nimble fingers ran up and down the keyboard in full control and with perfect timing in all the different styles he was able to cram into two 45 minute slots. Well done to a great band, come back anytime.
Many thanks to all the supporting players who traveled from near and far to entertain as well as enjoy the guest artistes. The players were :-
On accordion – John Anderson, Blair Gardiner, William Paterson, William MacAskill (all the way from Dunfermline on his first visit to the Biggar Club), Mel McLaren, Brian McMillan from Whitburn, John Fairbairn, Jim Paterson, Charlie Todd and Angus Lyon.
On keyboard – George Walker and Dorothy Lawson.
On drums – Eck Williamson, George Shiels, Jack McLeish, Jim Paterson and Duncan Riley and
On fiddle – David Corner and Alasdair Herron
The February meeting is to be a Club night where there is no specific guest artiste, held on 10th February.
Year 25 No 07 March 2002
The Biggar Club syllabus stated February was to be a Club Night and what a night it was! A wealth of talented local and not so local musicians turned out in force to play together and entertain a very appreciative audience with a good mix of traditional tunes. A&F Clubs are there to encourage budding musicians to get up in front of others and play, to give them the confidence required, and Biggar excelled on Sunday, 10th February.
Many of the players were youngsters who lacked neither talent nor confidence – it was a joy to hear. Fiona Paul, Jane Turner and Claire Noble played together providing a lovely sound, followed by other –
Accordionists – Andrew Gibb, Blair Gardiner, Tom Orr, Morgan Leslie, Allan Smith, Brian McMillan, Charlie Todd, John Fairbairn, Ian Graham, Willie McFarlane, Stuart Lochie, Keith Dickson and Alistair Dunnet.
Accompanying on piano were George Walker and Dorothy Lawson as well as Tom Orr and Keith Dickson.
Drummers on the night were Bob Henderson, Eck Williamson, George Shiels, Duncan Riley, Ian Graham and Jack McLeish.
David Corner entertained us with both concertina and fiddle and the other fiddler was Gilbert Logan.
Many thanks to all who turned out and made the evening such a success. Anyone interested in coming to play or just to listen put a note in your diary for Sunday, March 10th when the Club meets again at 7.30pm in the Municipal Hall. Ian Cruickshanks will be the guest artiste that evening. Entry is free for players, all others £2.50. Hope you can join us for what promises to be another good night.
Year 25 No 08 April 2002
Despite being a cold night, there was a respectable turnout of people to welcome the Ian Cruickshanks SDB to the Club on Sunday, March 10th. With Bill Milligan on drums, Jim Stirrat on fiddle and Johnny Murray on second accordion, Ian, on his button box, provided an excellent evenings entertainment with perfect timing and easy listening while playing mainly traditional Scottish music. Ian kept the crowd captivated throughout the night with his steady sound, which is a style he has become renowned for. Well done the band, thanks for a wonderful night.
Support was welcome from all other players who took part during the evening. These included –
On accordion – John Anderson, Tom Orr, Morgan Leslie, Jim Paterson, John Fairbairn, Gordon Walker, Brian McMillan, Charlie Todd, Alan Gardiner and Robin Waitt.
On keyboard – George Walker, Dorothy Lawson and Keith Dickson.
On drums – Tom Hope, Eck Williamson, Charlie Todd and George Shiels.
On fiddle – Gilbert Logan
And finally on concertina – David Corner.
Allin all a great line up. Thanks to everyone for making the night really enjoyable. The 01-02 season will be rounded off on Sunday, 14th April with guest artiste the Iain Anderson Trio. We hope to see a full attendance and, as always, welcome all players with open arms ensuring them of an opportunity to ‘strut their stuff’ on stage. The venue is, as usual, The Municipal Hall at 7.30pm. There is a raffle at half time, tea and biscuits, and entry for musicians is free. Come along and bring a friend, especially if they play an instrument, even if it’s the spoons! See you there!
Year 25 No 08 April 2002
The Ian Anderson Trio brought the 01-02 season to an end on April 14th and what a way to finish the season. This young fiddler from Edinburgh is a master of his trade, playing mainly jigs and reels but with the occasional slow air and waltz thrown in. Bob Turner on keyboard and Alan Irvine on drums completed the trio creating a sound not to be missed. Ian is one of Scotland’s top fiddlers and played with such confidence and precision, making it look easy. A special friend of the band ‘Jock the Box’ was asked to perform a couple of his favourite tunes during the night and this added extra to an already brilliant show. The band certainly rounded off the season on a high. Well done lads, thanks for a great night’s entertainment.
The end of season players included :-
On accordion – John Anderson, Jim Paterson, Mel McLaren, Peter Jardine, Ian Gracie, Charlie Todd, John Fairbairn, John Weaks, Susam MacFadyen and Bob Fortune (nice to see Bob back on the scene after recovering from a road accident).
On keyboard – George Walker, Dorothy Lawson and Mel McLAren.
On drums – Tom Hope, Eck Williamson, Bob Henderson, Jim Paterson and George Shiels.
On fiddle – Gilbert Logan and Shona MacFadyen.
On bodhran – Janet Ingram.
Thanks go to all players who supported the Club throughout the season.
The 02-03 season will begin on Sunday, 13th October when Nicol McLaren and the Glencraig SDB will appear as the guest artistes. Put a note in your diaries. Remember all players are welcome and allowed in free. Thanks must go to everyone who comes along to offer their continued support, not forgetting the bar staff and all the helpers. We hope you have enjoyed the recent choice of musicians and look forward to seeing you all in October.
