Mauchline, James
Served in the 78th Highlanders(Ross-shire Buffs) in the mid 19th century. He composed several well known tunes and was instructor to the Scottish Pipers Society. He wrote “The Portree Men” to commemorate the men of the Braes near Portree who played a prominent part in the incidents which led to the Crofting Act of the 1880’s, which greatly improved the conditions of tenure for the crafting communities.
