MacLeod, P/M Donald
(1916 – 1982)
Born in 1916 in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, and was taught first by his father at the early age of four. For five years he was a pupil of P/M Willie Ross and, for 25 years, was under the tutorage of P/M John MacDonald of Inverness who is widely accepted as being one of the greatest Master Pipers of all time. A professional piper all his life he served with the Seaforth Highlanders for 25 years – 21 of them as P/M. A redoubtable competitor from an early age, he enjoyed remarkable success up to his retirement from the competition field in 1966 having one eight Clasps for piobaireachd playing at the Northern Meeting. He won the Silver Star for MSR at the same venue six times and was probably the only competitor to have won all the events at the Northern Meeting over the years.
