Year 28 No 2 - October 2004
The opening meeting of Duns A&F Club was held on 20th September in the Masonic Lodge, Newtown Street, Duns. Chairman, Ronnie Patterson, welcomed everyone and the capacity crowd then settled to listen to a feast of music. As a thank you for all his assistance in getting the Club going Wiggy Brown, on accordion, was invited to launch the proceedings. We had a total of nineteen supporting players – Accordionists James Paterson, Alan Brown, Ronnie Patterson, Bill Ross, Angelo Pontone, Philip Gillie, Gary Forrest, Nicol McLaren and ten-year-old Andrew Waite.
Keyboard – Ian Lowthian, John and Jean Hall.
Mouth organ – Hugh McKenzie and Alistair Ferguson.
Lowland pipes – Jim Eaton.
Drums – Dave Bell and Eck Williamson.
Bodhran – Janet Ingram.
It was a pleasure to have N.A.A.F.C. chairman Nicol McLaren with us and he wished the Club every success in the future.
The attraction, of course, was our guest artiste Robert Whitehead and the Danelaw Dance Band and the audience thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed performance of accordionist Robert Whitehead along with Roddie Matthews on fiddle, David Ashbridge on drums and Graeme Whitehead on second box (thanks to Judith, Graeme’s mother, who traveled to Dumfries to collect him from college to enable him to play with the band).
Unfortunately we ran out of time and several supporting players were unable to perform and we hope it doesn’t discourage them from returning soon to join us.
Thank you to Karin Ingram who came along after her night class to wish us well and to take the photographs.
Finally we would like to thank the numerous local Clubs who came along to support us on our opening night, it was greatly appreciated and we look forward to meeting you all again very soon.
Dorothy Patterson (Secretary)
