The main features in the above issue were as follows (this is not a comprehensive detail of all it contained. The Club reports, in particular, are too time consuming at this stage to retype).
Editorial
What a great day we all had at Musselburgh! Well done to all of the worthy winners, and well done too to the Festival Chairman, James Coutts, and his Committee and helpers. It appeared to go like clockwork, but I dare say there were a few stressful moments on the day. We hope you enjoy the report and photographs.
In this issue you can see what goes on at a Shetland Hen Party – at least the photographs that we could print! We also have reports from last year’ Stanley Ceilidh and this year’s Ceilidh Weekend at Castle Douglas.
We are holding over our tribute to Iain Peterson for another month, because a few people have said that they would like to contribute. If you have a special memory of this delightful, talented man, then please share it with us.
Don’t forget to return your BAFFI slips.
Happy Easter!

Musselburgh 2006
by James Coutts
Given the horrendous weather in the North East during the week leading up to this year’s Musselburgh Festival and the sudden heavy snowfall across much of Scotland the day before, I wondered if we’d be driving or bobsleighing to the historic East Lothian town. Thankfully by the Friday afternoon the worst of the snow was by, meaning only a few competitors were unable to attend.
This year’s competitions attracted a bumper entry in excess of 250 and it was tremendous to see many new young faces from all over Scotland and particularly from the North of England. The only slight problem with such a large entry was scheduling the different classes, leading to strong coffee and Nurofen being consumed in large quantities by Lorna Mair, John Caskie and myself as we tried to fit everyone and everything in a couple of Sundays before.
All was worthwhile however, as both listeners and adjudicators praised the high standard of playing throughout. Our adjudication panel had an arduous task, as usual, but undertook it with the minimum of fuss and the utmost professionalism. For me, one of the very best moments from all my years at Musselburgh came during the afternoon heat of the Open Fiddle Championship Solo when one of the competitors got into difficulty during her performance. Instead of letting a problem situation develop, adjudicator Marie fielding, recruited at less than 20 hours’ notice to replace a snowbound Judi Nicolson, came forward and put her arm round the competitor’s shoulder. A few words of reassurance later, the competitor restarted her set of tunes and recovered so well that she reached the final play-off at the evening concert. This, for me, summed up all that’s good and best about Musselburgh Festival.
Our loyal band of clerks, announcers and stewards also worked like Trojans during the whole day to ensure that most halls ran very close to schedule, leaving everyone free to enjoy the Bands Competition in a packed Main Hall. Fourteen, yes FOURTEEN bands provided excellent entertainment for over two hours with the usual mix of talented youngsters and experienced stalwarts creating a competition of the highest standard. It was great to see Douglas’s Jim Gold, one of the youngest bands, take the top prize.
All hands were to the pumps as we cleared the Main Hall in preparation for the evening concert. As many of the day’s winners took to the stage, two particular highlights were the playing of 8-year-old Emma Dickson (Under 10 Accordion Champion) and her 10-year-old sister Hannah (Under 12 Fiddle Champion) who played to a standard way beyond their years. The Open Fiddle and Open Accordion championship Finals provided great entertainment with Gemma Donald and Gary Sutherland both retaining their titles. Our adjudicators have selected as next year’s composers, Iain Peterson (accordion) and The Gows (fiddle). The concert was expertly compered, as always, by Jennifer Cruickshank, joined this year by Dave Milward, due to the enforced absence of her usual co-host, John Caskie.
Highlights from the Bands Competition and Concert were once again broadcast by Ken Mutch and the BBC Radio Scotland team, who have become an integral part of the Festival, and will hopefully remain so.
Bringing the concert to a fitting climax were Iain Cathcart and his Band, as a prelude to the dance. Iain has been a great stalwart of the Festival for many years as a competitor, adjudicator and steward, and was therefore a popular choice for this year’s Dance. Having played with Iain for many years, I know there’s always a ‘laugh a minute’ and ‘carry on’ mentality within the Band, and this was evident in the great atmosphere their music created as Nellie the Elephant and Who Do You Think You Are Kidding Mr Hitler brought the crowd to near fever pitch. However, the great entertainment complimented, rather than being allowed to overshadow, the excellent playing and musicianship from Iain and the Band.
As always, it’s appropriate to conclude by thanking and acknowledging the tremendous support given to the Festival from competitors, listeners, dancers, parents, teachers, stewards, traders, advertisers, donors, member Clubs and BBC Radio Scotland. Extra special thanks are due to Festival Secretary Lorna Mair, Treasurer, Richard Ross and the rest of the Festival Committee. Their work rate and support throughout the year is second to none and it is an absolute pleasure and privilege to work with them.
Here’s to Festival number 33. Saturday, 3rd March 2007 is the date. See you all there!

Letters to the Editor
Dear Karin
It is with an element of regret that I write this letter on behalf of The Galston Accordion Club Committee. We first registered the Club in October 1969 and have functioned continuously since then until 13th March 2006. Over the years we have experienced several changes in the Accordion Club scene, which was inevitable as the whole domestic world was changing. We accommodated them into our social life and enjoyed being part of the music scene. It would take a few pages to write our memories as you may well imagine, the highs, and the lows, but most were highs and to be involved was a bonus. We tried to have guest artistes who were in the top bracket of their own particular type of music and we never were disappointed. We’ve had a great support, from players and punters alike and, as I’ve said many times, that is the main reason the Club was so successful. Billy Stewart, Bill Rodie and I founded the Club, unfortunately Bill Rodie died in 1994. Billy and I soldiered on and asked Derek Hamilton top join us and that’s how it’s been until now. There are two other Clubs in Ayrshire – Beith and Mauchline – and I do hope that they manage to continue. It may not be just plain sailing, but giver them your support. This decision to bring the Galston Club to an end was not an easy way out, but it’s a fact that the incoming of young people is not as high as the outgoing of the seniors and attendances are dropping. This may not be the case in areas of Argyll, Inverness and Aberdeen etc but we find it at Galston. Other Clubs have had to close – Milngavie, Stirling, Dundee, Lesmahagow – and we were well aware that it could happen to anyone. This decision may seem harsh but it was hard for us to take and administer.
May I, on behalf of The Galston Club, sincerely thank all of you guest artistes, players and supporters for your participation in providing the requirements for us to be able to function; our appreciation doesn’t stop because the Club has closed.
David Ross (Secretary – Galston Accordion Club)
Final Club Report
The last Club of the 2005/06 season was held on Monday 13th March in our usual venue, The Barr Castle Social Club at 7.30pm. We had a good turnout of players and had a very enjoyable musical evening with no guest artiste as such, although some did support us having a tune.
Due to the lack of support in replacing the current Committee (which had intimated its desire to stand down after 37 years) the Club will not be functioning next year or thereafter. (See Letters page in this mag).
On accordions were – David Muir, Bill Dunn, Jimmy Henderson, Bobby Stewart, Liam Stewart, Elliot Martin, Willie Young, Roy Hendrie, Bobby Dearie, Karen Ferguson, David Ross and Bill Speirs.
Fiddle – Andy Kain, Alistair Heron and Graham Couper.
Keyboard – Jim Law, Derek Hamilton, Liam Stewart and Reid Houston.
Mouthorgan – Bobby Torrance
Drums – Billy Stewart & Liam Stewart.
Thanks again to everyone who supported us over the years in any form. Although we have given up running the Club, our interest in the music and those who play it will remain as strong as ever.
David Ross (Secretary)
