Year 27 No 3 – November 2002
The opening night of the new season was held in The Ship Hotel in front of a fairly modest attendance. This was however to build up to a much bigger audience as the evening progressed. Jim Berry, Chairman, welcomes everyone and the evening’s entertainment got underway with a few selections on the fiddle by Jimmy McFarlane the Club Secretary, accompanied by Graham Berry on keyboard.
Other musicians who contributed to the entertainment in the first half were Chic Boath on his 3-row Shand Morino, Willie MacAskill (piano accordion), Betty Donaldson (piano accordion) and Sandy Tulloch playing a 2-row instead of his trusty Shand Morino. All were accompanied by Graham Berry.
It was then the turn of guest artiste Steven Carcary on piano accordion, accompanied by Malcolm Ross on drums. They gave an absolutely tremendous performance with a mixture of reels, jigs, waltzes and marches interspersed with a few Continental numbers. It was then half time with the usual tea, coffee and sandwiches.
The second half began with Mel McLaren on piano accordion. We then had Gus Gove (piano accordion), Arthur Wood (3-row) and Jim Kennedy (fiddle). The last player before the guest artistes was Michael Philip. Steven and Malcolm then took the stage to entertain us for the remainder of the evening. They again played a variety of selections including a totally unpronounceable German Polka which brought the house down. Many thanks to Steven and Malcolm for contributing to such a wonderful evening.
