Year 13 No 7 - March 1990
The monthly meeting of the Arbroath A&F Club was held on Sunday, 4th February, in the Viewfield Hotel. Once again we had a large crowd who enjoyed some good music from a smaller than usual number of musicians.
The Chairman, Ken Scott, first of all introduced June Beattie (keyboard), Terry Beattie (button-key), John Duncan (button-key), Dave Smart and Shona Smith (piano accordions), who set everyone’s feet tapping with some fine tunes.
Wayne Robertson was next to take the stage with John and June backing him. Wayne, as we have come to expect, gave us some great music.
Fiddlers were the majority of the next group who took the stage, with fiddlers Derek Lawler, Jim Ramsay, George Muir and Jim Birse (button key), with June on keyboard giving us a nice selection. June, again on keyboard and Derek on fiddle accompanied Bill Mackie (button key) and Gus Gove (piano accordion) to lead us up to our guest artiste spot.
This month we were delighted to welcome Bobby Crowe, Angus Fitchet, Joan Blue and Malcolm Ross. As was expected, they led us up to the break with some great music. Being so near the Bard’s birthday, we were treated to haggis, neeps and tatties – the haggis being carried in by Les Nicol, while bobby and the band played ‘The Star o’ Rabbie burns’. It was then very well addressed by Ken Smith.
After the break, we had a second chance to hear each of the musicians in turn, joined by Malcolm on drums and our very hard worked Secretary the only keyboard player of the evening, June Beattie.
Our guests were once again welcomed to the stage and continued to entertain us with a great selection of tunes, giving us some of their own compositions.
We were treated to an excellent fiddle solo from Angus, proving (in his own words) “there’s life in the old dog yet”. A stramash ended a very enjoyable evening.
Our next meeting will be a Members’ Club night, as it will also be our second AGM.
