Year 4 No 7 - March 1981
The first meeting of Campbeltown A&F Club, held in the Argyll Arms Hotel, Campbeltown, got off to a flying start when a capacity crowd gave a rousing reception to local and visiting artistes.
The Chairman, William McDougall, a local retired postmaster, introduced each artiste in turn, adding his own style of fun and laughter between times to an appreciative audience. Bobby MacLeod from Tobermory was the guest artiste and proved himself popular with the company. Dickie McGill, Oban, backed Bobby on the drums.
Fraser McGlynn, backed by two members of his band, Duncan McKay (keyboard) and Kevin McGlynn (drums), gave a great boost to the newly formed Club. Kintyre S&R Society gave a first-class performance as they always do.
Local artistes appearing during the evening were – Alex McAllister (accordion), Maurice Duncan (fiddle), Kate Bradley (fiddle), Catherine McLeod (fiddle), Alasdair Russell (accordion and piano), McCallum Brothers, Southend (accordions), Georgia Anderson (harmonica and tin whistle), The ‘Gem’ Singers (Marie McKinnon, Deborah Kerr and Heather Scott).
The manager of the Argyll Arms Hotel, Mr Sandy McMillan, provided hot soup and sandwiches to each person attending the function. He also offers special rates to any visiting artistes travelling the long distance down to Kintyre to play the Club nights.
The next meeting planned by the Club is to be held on Saturday, 4th April, when Bill Black and his Band are the guests.
