Year 11 No 2 - October 1987
On Friday evening the 4th of September, in McColl’s Hotel, a very enthuastic audience turned out for the monthly meeting of the Club.
The main guests of the evening were that very versatile duo, the Donaldson Brothers. Gary and Colin were assisted by a very good friend of theirs, drummer Gus Finlayson. After a wide and varied programme the boys were requested to play the well known Canadian bandleader Stan Hamilton’s ‘Flying Scotsman’ and after a very fine rendering of a most difficult piece, they were given a standing ovation.
The usual format for the evening is that the local players set the ball rolling and fill in at the interval etc. While there were too many to mention individually a special word of thanks to young Graham Irvine, who gave a very fine solo on the mandolin, ably backed by Jim McDonald on piano.
The evening ended with a stramash with all players taking part.
The next get-together will be October 2nd when the guests are Ian Holmes and his Recording and Broadcasting Band.
Year 11 No 5 – January 1988
The Dunoon & Cowal A&F Club held the AGM in McColls Hotel on the 25th October when the Office Bearers and Committ members were returned to office en-bloc.
The main Office Bearers are as follows :-
Chairman – Sandy McMillan, Elmbank, Tighnabruaich
Vice Chairman – Jim Cuthbert, McColls Hotel, Dunoon
Secretary – Evelyn Beaton, Ashburn, Tighnabruaich
Treasurer – Rhoda McMillan, Elmbank, Tighnabruaich
The main aim of the Club is to further the interests of Scottish music and the Committee would welcome with open arms anyone, young or old, who either play or would like to learn to play the accordion of fiddle. There is no competition among our players and all join in for the enjoyment of each other. So do come along and enjoy yourselves.
Please note – Club nights have been changed to the second Friday of each month.
The Club held their November meeting in McColls Hotel on Friday, the 6th, when the compere for the evening, Sandy McMillan, welcomed a number of new faces to hear the excellent programme the Committee had arranged.
The evening got under way with Colin Forgrieve on electronic box and Dodie Lauder on drums.
Next on stage were Derek MacDonald (box), Jimmy McDonald (keyboard) and dodie on drums.
The Blackthorne Ceilidh Band then took over, followed by George Campbell (box) and Dodie on drums.
Sandy introduced the guest artistes for the evening, the Willie Simpson Trio, with Willie Simpson on fiddle, Gordon Pattullo on accordion and George Darling on drums. This trio has nothing to learn in the art of entertaining. Their selections and playing ability were outstanding.
The interval came all too soon, but gave the Committee the chance to organize the raffle.
The second half got under way with George Campbell and Dodie.
The Blackthorn Ceilidh Band then took over, this time with John Peel on drums.
Sandy now welcomes back for their second spot the Willie Simpson Trio. During the second half all three did solo spots, with Willie playing a slow air, strathspey and reel ; Gordon playing his own arrangement of ‘Orange Blossom Special’ and George Darling giving a perfect take-off of the Laird of Dunblane with his vocals. Only two words are required to describe these very talented musicians – just fantastic. The Trio then invited our own players to join them for a thrash.
Sandy, our compere and Chairman, thanked the musicians and our members for their continued support.
