Torthorwald - pronounced by the locals as Ti-thor-al - near Dumfries - where Alex Little stayed
Year 1 No 2 - November 1977
The Club started a month early this year because of the availability of the Alistair Hunter Trio. By kind co-operation of Tom Edmondson of the Rothbury Club we were able to offer the guest artistes two nights and so make the journey from Aberdeen more profitable to them and more economical to us. A capacity audience listened and enjoyed this obviously well-rehearsed Trio and lesser known tune titles and sheets of ‘dots’ were exchanged with a large number of ‘local’ artistes.
October, 4th, 1977 – by special arrangement and good organisation of Sandy MacArthur of the Biggar Club and the co-operation of Bobby Colgan, Tom Edmondson and the M.A.F.I.A. we were able to have Paddy Neary as guest. He proved to be a very modest but very talented performer and demonstrated his skill with traditional music, Continental, classical and swing to the delight of some and the amazement of others. His performance was all the more noteworthy since his own instrument was out of action and he used Sandy’s Genovox in the first half and John Douglas’s Zero Zette in the second half. When his name was first mentioned nobody knew who he was. There is no doubt in their minds now.
The November Club night is arranged as usual for then last Tuesday of the month, that’s the 1st November, when we welcome a return visit of the Alan Coulson Trio from Newcastle.

Year 1 No 7 - April 1978
Our last meeting of the season was held in Torr House Hotel on Thursday, 30th March. The date was changed to fit in with a tour by Jim Halcrow and the Hamefarers Band from Shetland. A large audience heard and appreciated a very varied programme played excellently. With Jim on first accordion, Gordon Jamieson on second accordion, Ann Jamieson on piano, Douglas Johnstone on drums and Victor Jamieson on bass guitar, we had five of the friendliest people formed into a band which we will surely hear more about.
Our local artistes turned out in such numbers that apologies had to be made to those who were not included in the programme. We trust the quality of the music they heard will compensate for this and that they will call on us again – ‘Always a welcome at Torthorward.’
