MacNeill, Archibald (1879 - ?)
Born in Govan in 1879, his family came from Gigha where his mother’s side were prominent fiddlers. Donald MacLean of “Farewell” fame (pictured left) was a pupil of Archie MacNeill who dedicated the tune “Donald MacLean’s Farewell to Oban” to him in 1938 after Donald had played outstandingly well at the Argyllshire Gathering and got nothing for his trouble. Sympathetic fellow competitors said to him “Well, you won’t be back next year then” thereby inspiring the title.
