Year 6 No 2 October 1982
Peebles A&F Club started the new session on 30th September with Bill Black and Family as guest artistes. Although audience numbers were less than last year, there was a large number of playing musicians who had traveled from near and far – all who attended had a good night of various ‘sounds.’
Accordionists during the evening were John Laidlaw, David Scott, Allan smith, Ian Lowthian, Ronnie Johnstone, John Anderson, Jim Sharp, Ian Graham, Jack Mackenzie, Kathleen Scott, Wattie Beattie, Linda Gray, Karen Higgins, Graham Edwardson and Dougie Scott.
Pianists were Ian Wilson, Brian Forrest and Dorothy Lawson.
On drums were Bob Henderson, Bill Weir, Alastair MacBeth, Frank Bain, Sam Ferguson, Gerry Graham and Stevie Beattie.
The Club was pleased to welcome guest artistes Bill Black and Family – Bill with sons Robert and Duncan on accordion and Neil McMillan playing piano. The audience were soon enthralled as the foursome played a wide selection of tunes, including reels, marches, jigs, waltzes, hornpipes and polkas.
Throughout the evening Robert and Duncan had ample opportunity to show their own skills.
Our regular compere thanked the guest artistes for their slick playing and also all who helped to contribute to the success of the evening.
The next meeting of the Club will be held on Thursday, 28th October, at Peebles Ex-Servicemen’s club, when the guest artiste will be John McGregor and his Band.

Year 6 No 3 November 1982

Next it was the turn of the guests – John, Gordon Young, Jimmy and Adam Anderson. This band kept the music flowing – all types of selections were played with immaculate timing and all obviously enjoy their music. It is indeed a joy to listen and watch musicians who find playing together so effortless.
The next A&F night will be held in the Ex-Servicemen’s club in Peebles on 25th November when the guest artistes will be the one and only Jim Johnstone and his SDB.
Year 6 No 4 December 1983
Peebles Ex-Servicemen’s club was packed to capacity when Peebles A&F Club had the Jim Johnstone Band as guest artistes on 25th November. Despite the wintry conditions outside, the audience could not complain of the cold within!
Accordionists during the evening were John Laidlaw, Craig McCallum, Graham Crozier, Owen Wright, Alastair McLeod, Calum Smith, Jamie hope, Jim Bruce, Duncan Campbell and Findlay Robertson.
Fiddlers were Annie Robertson and John Houston. On keyboard was Dorothy Lawson. On bass was Steve Hunter. Drummers were Alastair McBeth, Bill Weir and David Neil.
As well as the guest artistes, the audience were treated to a grand selection of tunes from the Alistair Gillespie Orchestra – a group of 24 youngsters from Biggar and surrounding area. The newly-formed South-West Sound Band also made their first appearance at Peebles – the band comprising Morag Robertson on lead accordion, Adrian Hannah on second box, Frank Henery on electric guitar, Steve Hunter on bass and Bill Weir on drums.
What can be said about the Jim Johnstone Band that hasn’t already been said time and time again? Jim, Jim, Bobby, Billy and Max had the feet a’tapping right from the start when they ‘swung’ into reels, jigs, hornpipes, ‘little French numbers’ and waltzes!
Their immaculate style – and the obvious fact that they are enjoying themselves throughout – is indeed a treat to all. “Big Bobby’ gave his individualistic rendering of a couple of songs during the band’s repertoire which went down a treat with the audience.
This band truly does have a magic all of its own and Peebles will certainly be hoping to have a return visit from the ‘boys’ in the future. Their individual musicianship blends together so well to surely make THE band of the present time – haste ye back.
The next meeting of the Peebles Night will be held on 27th January, 1983, when the guests will be Jimmy Blue and Willie Simpson.
