Gordon Young started playing drums at the age of sixteen with Jim Nicholson’s band playing mainly for Scottish Country Dancing all over the Lothians. He played on the Iain MacPhail Band’s debut broadcast in 1972 and then performed with the Ian Holmes Band from 1972 – 1978. This was followed with a brief spell with Jim Johnstone and Jim MacLeod playing for numerous concerts, dances and TV shows. In the early 1980s Gordon joined Sandy Nixon’s Band and performed with this group for over 20 years including visits to USA, Canada and Indonesia. Gordon makes no secret about his love for Shetland, its people and its music and he has been lucky enough to attend most of the Shetland Accordion & Fiddle Festivals. He continues to enjoy playing with several bands including Charlie Kirkpatrick, Derek Hamilton, Lindsay Weir, Ian Cruickshanks and Jack Delaney. Gordon has made a long and valuable contribution to Scottish Dance Music as a musician and compere and he continues to present a polished and seemingly effortless performance based on his many years of experience.
